Emerging from Stuckness was a cycle of words/thoughts/emotion/action/words ... came risk. The sequential structure of a Risk Assessment Matrix offered clarity to the miasma of possibilities. Assessing the objective dangers of tools, materials, and physical harm lead to deeper more elusive risks such as shame, embarrassment, and public ridicule. 

The machine is a mechanical custodian of risk, a manifestation of how I sequence emotion, action, and writing.

A machine exists to perform a task
 
This machine functions in three ways (perhaps four) but three that I know of.
 
1 – a cycle, Drive (emotion) Compound gears (action) Tension (words/writing)
 
Beginning with the handle (emotion) which drives the ‘Attention-o-meter’ through which the initial emotions are amplified back and forth, round and around. The third phase is a tensioner, through which emotional labour is translated into words. These words (motion) emerge from the gumption, but are not the same, they are shadows and reflections of action.
 
2 – the third stage of a process of thinking(emotion), action(making), reflecting (reflecting through writing and talking). The first two stages involved a wordless emotional frustration from not being able to formulate a written response from talking about ideas. The frustration of not being able to give words to my internal feelings ignited a spontaneous action of caving a sphere from a tree branch. Having carved the ball I could find words to match my embodied memory of the action. These words I sent back to Matthew, and we spoke again.
 
3 –This machine is a custodian of risk a congruence of cumulative hazards some of which I have documented through the application of a risk assessment process.
