This short experiment was an extension of my original PhD proposal – ‘Stereoscopic Spatiality: A Practice Based Investigation into the Use of Stereoscopic 3D-Depth Technologies in Physical and Digital Space’. “Breaking Good” began as a suggestion in my first supervision to “Make something for your children” – my response to this was to recreate a childhood experience of my own. As a 5-year-old, myself and a friend took great delight in pushing plant pots off his grandmother’s balcony. We were captivated by the satisfying sound they made as they hit the patio below. This act of destruction was not merely reckless, but an unencumbered exploration of materiality, Newtonian physics and the delightful sound that ceramic vessels make as they shatter. The act of dropping, breaking and then rebuilding a ceramic pot was the first stage in attempting to recreate the events of 30 years ago. Although the intention had been to have my children break the pots, I found that the process of releasing the vessel, observing it break and rebuilding it piece-by-piece, entirely captivating.
